Getting a House extension: “sun room” / “garden room”?

Hello,

I want an extension built on the garden, connected to the outrageously long 廊下 of my old house and I’ve been browsing at “sunroom” / “garden room” here, but I can’t find any maker that does it with double-glazed window panes.

My searches in Japanese aren’t very fruitful in the sense that double-glazed windows seem to be so foreign in this country in general; they offer at best a 1cm thick roof and 4mm single-paned windows…

I found some companies that can do it, but it’s imported from Britain and I find it rather silly to import glass windows from so far, plus it costs 200man *excluding installation*. I’d rather have something a bit more local if that makes sense.

Should I give up on double-glazed verandas kit made in Japan and just ask a carpenter to build an extra room as an extension?

Your experience/opinions are very welcome, thank you. 🙂

  1. It’s been 8 or so years so going by memory, but I don’t recall seeing that option. And the price you quoted sounds familiar if it is a higher spec sunroom.

You do have to speak to the different places. I remember going to a garden center that had a department for sunrooms and they were outrageous – think it was 25 to 40man. We ended up paying I think 1,800,000-ish and what we got was enclosed of the back of the house with foundation posts into the ground, that fake wood/plastic as a floor (pretty much the same as you see on decks) and enclosed with single panes of plexiglass. The door panels open and fold, lock, and there is an inner screen. Technically, I’m not sure this is really up to code, but I hear that’s very common in Tokyo.
