Need Help with Google IME

I’ve been battling this for hours, and I just can’t figure it out.

Out of the blue, Google Japanese IME is now typing differently on some apps than others. On firefox, chrome, and Microsoft Office, it types correctly, but on Microsoft Edge and Anki it does not.

What I want it to do, for example, is to create the hiragana “た” when I type “t” and “a” with an English-hardware keyboard. But in Edge and Anki, I get the hiragana “か” then I type “t” and then “ち” when I type the “a.” I get one full hiragana for each key.

To make this even odder, The applications it affects has changed. It was working fine on everything except a Microsoft Store App called Takoboto the other day–I assumed it was an issue with the app. But now that app works just fine, and Anki/Edge don’t, which I was also using the other day at the same time as Takoboto. It doesn’t appear to be app specific.

I’ve tried reinstalling (and then re-uninstalling) Microsoft’s Japanese language materials. I’ve tried resetting Google IME back to defaults. I’ve tried reinstalling Google IME. I’m just at a total loss on this. The problem is so weird that I don’t even know what to google, as the search results seem hopelessly convoluted/filled with other issues.

If anyone’s familiar with this issue, I’d love the help. This is causing me a huge issue with school.

  1. Ok so I can tell you *what* is happening, although I have no idea why it would be only on some apps and not others.

Japanese-language keyboards actually have two possible layouts. If you buy a physical keyboard there, in addition to the QWERTY keys, each key also has a single kana character printed on it ([Like this](https://www.addictivetips.com/app/uploads/2021/05/Japanese-keyboard-IME.jpg)). You have the option to change the input method so that instead of typing “t-a” for た, you hit the “q” key because that’s the one mapped to the た character. 99% of people in Japan type using the romaji input methods, but it’s still pretty standard to have both options on every keyboard.

It used to happen at my old job occasionally, every so often the input method on one of the computers would just randomly change, and we’d have to dig into the settings and switch it back. (Super annoying, and we never did figure out how/why it happened.)

So I would recommend going into the keyboard settings, it might be called “keyboard layout” or something like that. But again, I have no idea why it would only be happening on some apps and not others.
