eye glasses and prescriptions

I have glasses that are easily 10 years out of date when it comes to an updated prescription. I moved here in 2018 and have noticed my distance vision has gotten worse since then. I know I need an updated prescription. Do I need to visit an ophthalmologist first and then someplace like JINS or megane super or can I get an eye exam there and walk out with a stronger set of lenses than I currently have without seeing an ophthalmologist?

I remember going to a lesncrafters back in the day, like WAY back, when I was still living in the states but don’t remember if I had gone to an eye doctor prior to that and even that lenscrafter visit was years after I had gotten my first pair of glasses.

  1. You don’t need a prescription from an ophthalmologist for a pair of glasses. Eyewear shops have in-store opticians who will measure your eyesight and determine the correct lenses you need. Just visit any eyewear shop and they’ll guide you through the entire process.

  2. I’ve done both: going to the optometrist then taking that prescription to Jins, and just going directly. I actually prefer the latter. My glasses weren’t quite perfect when I did the former, though I can’t say why. In any case, it’s certainly easier to have the staff and Jins or Zoff or Days Own or whatever do it. It’s mostly done by machine now anyway, with some minor adjustments (“which is better, this or this”) so unless you have something unusual with your vision, there’s not much reason to go to a specialist.

  3. If you already have a Bic Camera point card, they offer eye exams that were no different from the exam that I previously had at the ophthalmologist, take insurance, and have a decent selection of contacts and glasses available. I prefer having more Bic points to making a new point card at some glasses shop that I’m unlikely to visit again.

  4. Ordinary cases are easily done at glasses shops. Personally I like megane super, although I have strong astigmatism that shops can’t measure, my experience is good that they can order special lenses and relatively cheap and with insurance. I even had clinics surprised that these lenses possible “where did you get these glasses?”

  5. I just went directly to the eyeglass store and have my new prescription determined there. If it further helps, it is Megane Ichiba.
