May 23-25, 12 Day Trip, Tokyo – Hakone – Kyoto

Hello!

My husband and I are traveling to Japan for the first time in May. I’m absolutely overwhelmed, of course, but this thread helps so much. I want to ask your advice on a split between Tokyo/Hakone/Kyoto. I tend to over-do our travel plans, so I always try to calm down and have some lazy time in our itinerary, as well as not to book too many travel days.

Initially we thought to just split 50/50 between Tokyo/Kyoto, but Hakone is highly recommended. Is it too much to fit Hakone in the 12 days itenirary (see below) or should we just keep 50/50? Or should we do something differently?

Thank you!

  1. I don’t think people can definitively say it fits without knowing what specifically you want to do in Tokyo and Kyoto.

Main reason to go to Hakone is for the hot springs and seeing Mt. Fuji(albeit from afar), so if that’s something you’re interested in then it’s worth stopping over for a night.
