Pop up Cafes Japan 2023

Hi guys, this is my very first post so be kind 😊.

My boyfriend and I are going to Japan in March-April and I’m trying to look at anime collaboration/pop up cafes since we are both really big fans of anime and manga. However I’m struggling to find anything other than the chainsaw man cafe, which is ok but we ideally like to go to a couple (we are both big foodies as well so for us it’s the perfect combination). We are booking the Pokémon cafe as well! But my question is where can I find up to date information on what cafes will be open in April? Has anyone got any secret websites on this they are willing to share? 🥰 TIA

  1. If you are foody, that is actually the worst combination as collab cafe are not known for the quality of their food. Check Emirichu on youtube she did two video about the cafe she visited.

    Otherwise https://collabo-cafe.com/

  2. Check out the Collabo-cafe site. Probably will update with more upcoming events closer to the dates.

  3. My somewhat limited experience has been that often pop-up collab cafe things are announced on the official Twitter accounts of whatever shows you might be interested in. They are usually going to be related to current or last-season shows, established franchises (Idolm@ster, Love Live, Aikatsu, Precure, etc.) or older shows that were popular and they’re looking to get some nostalgia-related ~~Dollars~~ Yen from otaku

You might also get information from the official websites from the venues that usually host them.

Out of the two venues I used to know, one of them closed permanently during the pandemic but it looks like the other one is still open. https://www.paselaresorts.com/collaboration/nbcu-cafe/

As for the food itself, it’s expensive and not much to write home about but it’s not bad either. You are mostly going to be paying 2500円 or so per person for some (your show here)-themed food and maybe a random small postcard-sized souvenir print

  4. Capcom has an official Cafe in Umeda:

They switch out what the theming on a fairly regular basis. I know in late December it was Phoenix Wright themed because my friend who lives in Osaka went.

There might be a Capcom Cafe in Tokyo as well, but I know Capcom has its headquarters in Osaka, so the Osaka one might be the permanent one

Kirby has a permanent Cafe in Skytree and I think Fukuoka. There was a temp one in Nagoya but I don’t remember when it was closing.

This Peter Pan Cafe will probably be done by the time you get there, but the Oh My Cafe has done other themed cafes before so I expect they will do more:

I think Sweets Paradise doe regular anime cafes. I know they were doing a Spy x Family when I was there.

If you like Ghibli there is of course Shirohige’s

I like the cookies a lot, the cream puffs are OK, but super cute for pictures.

I will say, having eaten at the Pokemon Cafe, the Kirby Cafe, and gotten cookies from the Sailor Moon Museum, they’re not even close to a gourmet experiences. The Kirby Cafe had much better food than the Pokemon Cafe, but that is honestly not saying that much. You go to them for the experience and merch not for the food, so being a foodie is not really a plus. I’m not a foodie, and can tell you the food at the Pokemon Cafe is mediocre at best.

If you want a delicious food experience, go to one of the buffets/afternoon teas at a fancy hotel. Some are just normal themes like strawberry or matcha or Christmas, but some are pretty wacky. There was a metal themed dessert bar at the Ark in Osaka with Anthrax and Iron Maiden themed desserts

And I am still laughing at the bizarre Cats themed buffet at the Strings in Nagoya.

The Macavity themed option seems just sort of weird but the Mango Jelly for Mungojerry makes me laugh too much.

I went to a Christmas themed one at the Osaka Ritz and it was delicious and one of our favorite meals in Japan. I’ve been leaving room in our next trip to try to get in at least two tea experiences.

  5. Thank you everyone, I thoroughly appreciate your input I will have a look at the links 🥰
