I got scammed on a K-ETA Website. What should I do?

Hello, I’m a US citizen living here in Tokyo. Wife and I were planning to go on a quick trip to Seoul for the first time and was rushing to the airport and paid for the 1 hour K-ETA priority approval. Her website was the legitimate one, and In a rush on the train holding luggage I clicked on a fake one that was on top of the results page. Didn’t notice until a few hours later because glancing over at her phone the websitr layout was exactly the same – so I didn’t bother to double check.

They advertised $30 for the priority approval but charged me $169 on my debit. Used my credit card initially and it was declined by the website and I was in a rush so I didn’t think twice about it. I also put some passport info (US Passport)

We had to change the flight since her K-ETA was approved quickly on time while mine wasn’t. Airport people directed me over to the official app where I do have my K-ETA and it’s approved now, but still missed the original flight.

Besides calling my bank, should I contact my embassy? How dangerous is it that I gave away my passport number and issuing/expiration date?

Appreciate any wisdom.

  1. A passport isn’t enough, get your papers out. Show me your papers, Komrad!

Also, please do a chargeback with your bank to return your stolen money.
