Not able to learn Japanese for months.

So me and my (Japanese) friend from Japan want to start uploading covers of VOCALOID songs on Niconico sometime. Unfortunately, my Japanese is really poor, compared to her OK-ish English. I don’t mind to practice singing itself, but I absolutely hate learning the language. I’m just really bad at learning languages, and I have ADHD which makes it so much worse. I even stopped going to my local Japanese school because I was always so bored there. The main problem is, I love the language. I like to sing Japanese songs, and would love to speak it, but I hate the process so much. It’s basically impossible for me to learn the language. Even if I were to learn spanish, a much easier language for english speakers, I would still suck at it (also I don’t like spanish).

Is there any way I can make it less overwhelming for me? I feel really bad for not actually spending the time in my friends language, despite all the physical and online resources I’ve got. It might also be my mental health, but that doesn’t explain then why I can practice singing but not Japanese. Help is really appreciated.

  1. One more thing, every time I think about this, I always feel like crying. I just feel miserable not being able to learn the language I love.

  2. You seem to have a lot of comments about how you hate the process, but I don’t see you mentioning what exactly you’ve done so far and come to abhor. What resources and methods did you use? Are there any milestones you’ve reached, if any?

Also, there’s a bunch of posts about people with ADHD learning the language; search the sub for that kind of advice.

  3. You can sing in Japanese and not know Japanese.

Just learn Hiragana which takes only a few hours. I guess if you have severe ADHD it might take longer, but I mean even if it takes you 10 times longer, that’s 30 hours instead of 3, that’s not much time.

Lyrics can usually be found online. They have kanji, but just look up the kanji and write it down in hiragana. Hiragana is all you need for this. If you get really stuck just ask on r/translator

Otherwise if you actually want to learn Japanese, you are gonna have to get into really good study habits. It’s hard for everyone though, just push yourself. Write down your study times.

Also stop beating yourself up it doesn’t help.
