Just an info sharing post. Not sure if it’ll help anyone, but we spent a night with no hot water and it ended up being an easy fix, so hope it doesn’t happen to anyone else.
It got down to -14C this week and got an error message on our water heater control panel. If this happens to you, first check if your unit has burst. Shouldn’t really happen if you normally use it. If no burst, check the condensation outflow, which should be on the bottom somewhere. Usually water drips out, but with the freezing weather, it could freeze right at the outflow and develop a blockage, which sets off a sensor. I kinda poked the ice lightly with a screw driver and that did the trick. All of the trapped water started to flow out and now good as new.

This happened to me too! Same cause, I expect. Ours just stopped outputting hot water for a bit and then resumed working, so I am assuming the blockage cleared itself up after a time. My wife’s been on the phone with all the water heater companies trying to source a new one, because they’re in short supply and ours is 10 years old, but it may not be necessary yet.
