Workplace rounds the time up by 15min when late to work

So my workplace has a policy that when you clock in at 11:01 your time will be round up to 11:15. It doesn’t apply for quitting tho. When I quit at 22:14 my quitting time is 22:00. Is this legal in Japan? I don’t work for free so the next time I should be a minute late to the clock I will wait till XX:15 to start work. Or could I get some serious consequences for it?

Do you guys have some relatable storys about such policies in Japan?

  1. It was the same at my baito (hotel housekeeper), so when work was done we usually chilled in the dressing room until 16, 31, 46, 01 to clock out. If we knew we’d be late in the morning, we lined a collegue to clock in for us.

  2. I used to work a job where if I was late 30 minutes, they’d take half a day of paid leave. So my guess is it’s pretty common.

  3. My wife who is the 総務 head of a small company just told me that it is illegal.
If you want you can file a complaint a the labour bureau anonymously and your company will get a visit and verify what is happening.

  4. Why though, your company’s system can only compute quarters? Doesn’t make any sense 🙂

  5. Doesn’t sound strange to me. Worked at once of the biggest Japan conglomerate, also had the same rule.

  6. Why not just be on time? Leave earlier even if you have time to wait. A job is what gives you the means to enjoy other things that require money so I’d think you’d appreciate it and take it seriously.
