I’m considering Tokini Andy’s Japanese/genki course. But I’m also wondering if I need any supplemental resources or prerequisites?

I’ve been on and off about learning japanese for yeeeaaars. But I’ve always felt I wanted a very well structured, hand holding online course to help me through it as this is such a daunting endeavor. I haven’t heard anything bad about Tokini Andy’s material, but I’d appreciate any input you have before I dive in.

Any recommendations? I want to get started with a full deck if you know what I mean.

  1. If it’s based on Genki I doubt you need to know anything. Genki starts from teaching kana. I think the only Japanese I knew before starting Genki was arigatou, konnichiwa, and chinko shabure and was perfectly fine going through the two volume series from zero. Honestly the Genki books are good enough on their own though if you’re comfortable learning from a book and they give you a very solid foundation if you don’t rush and do all the exercises, reading, and listening.

  2. I haven’t tried his paid materials yet, but his free YouTube videos are really solid. He starts from zero with Genki, so you should be able to dive right in without any prerequisites (apart from kana).
