Using the IRS website, I’m having difficulty finding a working online so-called free file “partner” option that can handle my Japanese address. Has anyone had any luck with this ? I’ve been through all I can find listed. Either I couldn’t qualify or they could not / would not accept the address. I’ve tried abbreviating the address as best I can, but change or omit any part of my Japanese address and mail simply does arrive here. US based banks and government agencies also have a bad habit of making additional alterations to what I give them or simply misspelling it. Missing/lost correspondence and neglected or incorrect record keeping on the government end continue to cause serious issues. I’m still waiting for refunds and correspondence from the IRS that was supposed to arrive a year ago. Some “economic stimulus” payments never arrived. When I last went through the US embassy as required for Social Security correspondence, for example, it took nearly a full year for a response despite repeated queries to the embassy SSA section, again as required.

I switched to taxslayer.com after turbotax abandoned free file and stopped doing taxes for expats.
I only use TaxSlayer. Never had a problem, my 2022 return was accepted in about an hour after filing.
My friends use TaxAct FreeFile edition and have had no issues whatsoever. Hope this helps
I’ve used the standard freefilefillableforms.com every year and had no problems with having a Japanese address. I don’t abbreviate anything and just use a straight romanization in USA order.
For example:
〒814-0011 福岡県福岡市早良区高取2丁目18−6
becomes
2 CHOME 18-6 TAKATORI, SAWARA WARD, FUKUOKA CITY, FUKUOKA PREFECTURE, JAPAN 814-0011
I got all my stimulus payments, other mail from the IRS, and absentee ballots.
