Several question for anyone who went to the Unitas Language School in Kofu.

I am looking at different options for a Japanese Language school and having looked at all the options, I felt that the best one was the UNITAS in Kofu. I was wondering what the experience is like living in Kofu and how the school actually feels like. I looked up a bit about the city and it seems to fit my “vibe (?)”. However, I couldn’t find much on the School so I wanted to ask what going to study there was like. I found the school through Gogonihon but I may consider applying directly to the school instead. Is that the better choice here? Or does Gogo provide more reassurance?

  1. Kofu is hot. Really hot. The pollution is terrible in the summer because it’s a valley and all the craps settles in the air there. If you have any other options, I’d go there. Probably nicer inaka locales with language schools.

  2. The school is close to downtown and the station. It’s on a little side street over by the JA building. I drove by it last week and they have expanded.

I liked the Kofu valley area, but, I also wasn’t a student so I had a vehicle/etc.. I did attend the school for a term to improve my Japanese and it wasn’t great for me, but then again like I said old married guy who’s got a job and family and can’t spend as much time studying as a student who’s motivated could. Some people picked it right up some did not. They did have a career board with baitos and companies looking for part time workers like some of the food companies and Yamato visiting.

As Laika says it’s one of the hottest driest places in Japan. Lot of nature though but as a student you’re probably not going to have a vehicle so most of it is out of your range. There are 2 train lines and the trains are every 15-30 minutes depending on the time of day, the buses are also not frequent – some being hourly some being less than that, if you don’t live near the school it will be very inconvenient. Getting to someplace like Tokyo is difficult/expensive/time consuming even with the express trains.
