I was studying some anki cards today and came across this sentence: “39度も熱が出て、学校へ行けません” “I have a fever of 39 degrees, so I can’t go to school” Why is there a も particle used between 39度 and 熱? Would “39度熱が出て、学校へ行けません” mean exactly the same?
も after numbers can either mean “around/about” or “that much”, expressing surprise/emphasizing how big the number is. In this case it seems to be the latter.
Running AS MUCH AS a 39C degree fever (102F), I can’t go to school
You are following a book series of some sort, right? Genki, Tae Kim? This usage comes up in the natural course of learning も and reasonably early.
