Looking for cheap egg recommendations

Hi everyone,

With the [living prices soaring](https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20230120/p2a/00m/0li/009000c#:~:text=TOKYO%20%2D%2D%20Japan’s%20agriculture%20ministry,over%20the%20past%20five%20years.) , Egg prices are currently at an all time high. My family regularly consumes a large amount of eggs. We usually go through a 10 pack in 2-3 days.

Where I’m originally from, we purchase eggs at a grilled chicken retailer (better quality, larger, and cheaper for the price) instead of the supermarket.

Any recommendations in Japan where to purchase cheaper eggs aside from the supermarket/drugstore?

*edit* my location is in Setagaya, Tokyo for clarity purposes

  1. Not sure where you are, but I live in Saitama and eggs are 198 and on Tuesday and Sunday it’s 98 if you buy above 1000yen. Gyomu super also has egg for 248.

  2. There is always a rack of ¥128 a 10 pack nestled in with the expensive ones at local big supermarkets around Kansai (Aeon, Valor, Gyomu etc). That’s still pretty cheap and Japanese eggs are always good quality (size of course varies). Could be an old wise tale but I have always been told that Japanese eggs are made for raw consumption hence their shelf life is short and they are always fresh. When is the last time you heard someone get sick from eating a raw egg?

  3. Shop on Sundays and/or Thursdays at [カスミ] *Kasumi* or [ストッカー] *Sutokka* for a 10% off everything cupon, valid from the following day for a week.

This really helps reduce the grocery bill in general.

  4. The reason why egg prices are moving up is a lot of culling of birds due to bird flu. Unless you keep your own chickens you will not find a cheaper alternative than the cheapest supermarket in Tokyo. The distance you would need to travel to find somebody selling eggs for cheap in the inaka will cost more than the savings. And due to the scarcity of non-flu-ridden birds, it won’t be that cheap there either.

  5. The drugstore chain Create SD has shops in Setagaya and they sell cheaper eggs. Can’t remember the price but I noticed that it was much cheaper than Summit and all the fancy chains you have in Setagaya

  6. Hello fellow egg person.

The cheapest eggs I could find were on Amazon. There are 80 eggs set deals for roughly 3000 yen. The eggs are delivered either from kuroneko or via Yu-Pack and its rare to find anything cracked during delivery.

  7. Maybe consider reducing your egg consumption. You can choose alternatives. If breakfast, there are granola, cheese, cream, breads..etc. it’s good for health to vary your food.
