Check in for International Flight out – Baggage Q

My flight’s with ANA, and I’m wanting to bring two extra cases with me (Because fuck postage prices right now) and because work booked my flight back for me, I’ll have to pay for the extra baggage at the airport.

Ideally, I’d like to take my bags in asap, so I don’t get stuck with ‘oh there’s no space’ and I know you can check in up to 24 hours before the flight online, I was wondering if that’s something I can do in person too. Go into the airport, check in, and then drop off my 4 bags.

Is it possible to give them my checked bags if I check in 24 hours before my flight?

  1. When I got to the airport earlier than expected with my standard 2 check in bags, they hadn’t even opened the check in counters yet for that flight so I had to wait. Maybe you won’t be able to bring bags so early as you were hoping

  2. I very much doubt you’ll be able to check-in luggage before the counters open up, but what I would do is check-in online and be the first person in line for the counters when they open. If it were me in your situation, I’d be at the airport 4 hours in advance. Helps too if you have a gold mileage card with them or equivalent through Star Alliance.

  3. This information might be a few years out of date, but the last I heard with ANA is that they’ll take bags as early as 6 hours before departure.

That said, however, if you’re at an airport with those automatic baggage conveyors, there’s often a (slightly) longer window
