You actually can stop residency and keep your PR if you say you intend to come back within 5 years. The advantages of this is:
– no “upkeep” in Japan. You don’t need to keep an address, don’t need to keep paying pension/health insurance etc.
– it would also help your case if you want to lose your status as a resident for tax purposes. But this is complicated and also depends on your home country.
Why you would still want to keep an address:
– you want to retain Japanese bank accounts and other amenities such as a mobile phone number, 個人事業主, etc.
– if you give up your address, you must come back TO LIVE within 5 years if you want to keep your PR. (edit) If you have an address here it’s easier to come and go since you are still a resident.
For cheap ways of keeping an address, I guess you could find a place in a small town that’s really cheap to rent, or a guesthouse. You could buy a property (btw, it’s “abandoned” house) but the really cheap ones you hear on the news usually have conditions attached ie you need to renovate it.
