While studying for the BJT, I came across a question asking which of these would be correct (don’t have my book on me, atm). I knew 逃避, 回避, and 退避 meant “escape / evacuation”, and although I had never heard of 忌避, I could guess it meant something similar.
My question is: What’s the nuance between the four?

These are all fairly different and they are all common words. The definitions in any dictionary even Jisho should be sufficient to explain this, but what is the question and why these four?
Don’t know if this would help, but have you tried looking up all three expressions on Takoboto and clicking on the “Phrases” tab (the third one on the top right) just to see how they’re used?
Going by (what I understood from) the dictionary definitions:
>回避
Means evade or dodge (e.g. an attack). Also avoid (e.g. dangers, responsibility).
>逃避
Means avoid (e.g. a difficulty). Has the nuance of shirking stuff that should be done. You know, as in avoiding reality.
>退避
Means evacuation, usually temporary (e.g. evacuation drill).
>忌避
Avoid something, with the implication that the thing being avoided is unpleasant/loathed. Think of a pacifist dodging the draft.
