Advise on places and general requirements to apply for tech jobs in Japan.

Hello.

I’m thinking about moving to Japan for a couple of years to work and have been studying a little bit of Japanese now.

I have been reading through the posts here and it seems that my background (4 years web developer, Bachelor of Comp Sci) is suitable to start applying to some jobs through websites like Japan dev. I have been mostly browsing for mainly English speaking jobs.

Is there any other websites that are reputable that I can look into and is there anything that I may be missing that would make it harder to apply top these jobs?

One of my friends has advised it may be good to go there on a student visa through a Japanese language school and then find work after this, as it would be easier to find work if you’re already there.

What are your thoughts?

I don’t know why this is perpetuated.

Any job that can offer you a visa sponsorship will not care if you’re in or outside the country, you’ll require visa sponsorship regardless.

Any job that requires you to be in the country already is usually because they expect you to already be on valid visa that allows you to work.

  2. I think it is totally possible to get a job in Japan from abroad. The only inconvenience would be interviews late at night, depending on which timezone you live.

I never advise quitting your job to come to Japan to look for jobs. I would only recommend it if you really can’t wait to come here. But if you start looking now, I am positive that you will be boarding a plane to Japan in about 6 months from now (the visa process alone will take roughly 3 months).

As for the websites, I would add LinkedIn to your list.

  3. My advice wait till around April for the new fiscal year. Right now hiring freeze is pretty much everything tech.

Essentially make a list apply to everything and hope and be prepared for the massive pay cut.

  4. I had a few offers and the pay was abysmal so keep that in mind. Like 1/3 of my salary abysmal.
