If I wanted to try and immerse myself as much as possible, is it okay to play a game or two in Japanese?

I was wondering if adding in a game or two in Japanese would be beneficial or fun or whatever since I already play video games anyways.

I feel like having a fun game in Japanese could keep me locked in for a lot longer than having to sit down and read essays for hours.

I’d still spend time listening to videos, reading books, and practicing vocabulary, but if there’s some way to make it more fun that would be great.

Game suggestions would be appreciated!

  1. Of course it’s okay. Even more so if you can already watch and read other stuff and don’t need to look up every single thing. I learned quite a lot naturally just playing Yakuza 0.

  2. I’d recommend Zelda 2 & Castlevania 2 for Famicom, ぼくじょうものがたり(Harvest moon) for the Super Famicom. The Famicom usually used カタカナ exclusively due to memory limitations, so bear that in mind but anything Super Fami and up has at least some kanji. Chrono Trigger is another good one but is fairly advanced so you (I have to) might end up looking up various kanji pretty regularly.

  3. I mean if you have something you’d enjoy you should 100% go for it. Even though persona is relatively hard I jumped right into it cause it’s fun and I learnt a crazy amount while playing.

    Personally I’ve played:
    1: Persona scramble/strikers
    2: paper Mario
    3: pokemon sw/sh
    4: Animal crossing
Extra: playing Apex Legends on the japan servers and getting a ton of speaking practice with natives.

I’d recommend using a switch for most of these tho since PlayStation you’d have to buy things from the Japanese store whereas on switch you can just change the console language at any time.
