Hello!
I will be traveling to Japan from the U.S. for the first time at the end of March. However, my U.S. passport will expire July 2023.
The embassy website states, “Passport validity required for traveling to Japan: Duration of intended period of stay. Note that although you are not required to have 6 months’ validity on your passport to enter Japan, you may need 6 months’ validity if you transit Japan to travel to other countries.”
From my understanding, my passport will be valid for my stay in Japan. However, I have concern if there may be issues returning to the U.S. since my passport does not have at least 6 months at the time of return. Also, I’m not to sure about renewing at this moment due to concerns of my renewed passport not being mailed to me in time (even with expedited).
Will returning to the U.S. be a problem in this situation?
Thanks ahead of time for your help!

If you are a US citizen you are fine to get back in the US as long as its not expired. And don’t risk renewing it now – mine took 10 weeks to be mailed instead of the 6-9 its supposed to take.
A lot of countries have that stupid 6 month rule so make sure to always renew your passport like 8 months before it’s expiration. I for one always renew my passport one year so as not to have any problems.
From the rule stated you should be good as long as you’re flying direct but you should call the immigration to clarify
