Can’t decide between Kusatsu Onsen or Karuizawa

Kusatsu Onsen isn’t a great option for a day trip from Tokyo. There are three ways to travel there from Tokyo, and they take around 2.5 to 4 hours. If you were planning on taking the fastest option, then you’d have to transfer to a bus Karuizawa anyway, so it makes more sense to go there.
Personally, if it was me, I would cut a day from either Kawaguchiko or Hakone to make Nikko, Karuizawa, Kusatsu, and Kamakura work.
Paying out of pocket for Tokyo to Kamakura/Enoshima is not terrible expensive and your Wide pass will 100% save you money with Nikko and Karuizawa,
