Regarding DoJG Series

I am aware that this series predates the jlpt so that a one to one comparison isn’t feasible.

Is there any indicator as to how exactly the three books are arranged in terms of relative commonality of the grammar points listed?

That is, how exactly is a grammar point deemed “basic” or “intermediate” in this series.

I imagine there is more overlap between the basic volume and beginner/n5-4 textbooks by virtue of being beginner grammar, but would you find, for instance, that the grammar points in the intermediate volume show up more in conversation relative to the advanced grammar, or is it all one mix that’s anyone’s guess as to how it’s arranged?

  1. I don’t really think you should worry about that, dojg is used as a reference, you want to know more about a certain bit of grammar so you look it up. Grammar shows up where it shows up, so you should get all 3. If money is too tight to get all three, then you’d be better off just using free resources on the internet.

  2. The Dictionaries of Japanese Grammar are more like a reference rather than something made specifically for a course or a test.

The Basic dictionary should more-or-less correspond to N5 – some of N3.

The intermediate dictionary is N3 to N2.

Advanced is between N2 to N1 (I don’t think it has everything, but I’ve never compared them completely).
