Pepperball/airsoft legality

Hello, curious about Japan, and I understand that many weapons that are legal in the US, are illegal there; however, I’m curious to know if anyone is familiar with this: https://byrna.com/
It’s almost like an airsoft that shoots pepperballs. Last I remember, airsoft is allowed in Japan, from what I’ve seen from competitions there; however, would these devices from the website be allowed in travel to and/or in Japan? And if not, would there be a source? Thank you

  1. I’m inclined to say that you’d not be able to bring those sorts of things with you to Japan.

Airsoft is indeed legal, although there is a maximum power rating which these things may be approaching (or exceeding). I suppose whether these things are legal based on power would depend on how the power is measured. Purely by muzzle velocity their website implies a max speed of around 300fps (around 92m/s) which is high but probably okay.

My instinct would say though that the pepperballs would constitute chemical weapons and would be prohibited as such.

Out of curiosity, and perhaps I’m reading this wrong, are you implying that folks in the United States are pelting each other with pepperballs for fun?

If you want proper confirmation I would suggest reaching out to Japan customs directly. Get some contact details here: https://www.customs.go.jp/question_e.htm
