Advice about visiting Nasu-Shiobara

Hey all, my husband and I are heading to Japan this year in May between the 13-29th. This will be my 4th time visiting. One thing I’ve wanted to do was to visit Nasu-Shiobara in Togichi and we’ve planned to spend two nights at an Onsen hotel there. The only thing is that I haven’t been able to find much information for travelers visiting there, especially in English. We’re planning on renting a car while we’re there to get around. I have about a year of basic Japanese classes under my belt, so I’m not great but I can probably get by with some basic language skills.

This is our tentative itinerary. Any advice, recommendations, additions, thoughts are welcome!!

5/23: Arrive in Nasu from Tokyo. We have a long travel day that day, connecting from Kanazawa to Tokyo and then to Nasu. Planning to arrive in Nasu at about 2/3pm. Pickup rental car. Visit Penny Lane bakery for snacks and a coffee. Check into Kokoro-no-Oyado Jizaiso Onsen hotel. Dinner at hotel.

5/24: Breakfast at hotel. Drive to Nasu Animal Kingdom. Spend the morning there, and have snack at the park. Drive back to the main town and visit Sesshoseki rocks. Have lunch at Gioia Mia. Visit the Nasu Yuzen shrine in the afternoon. After that, not sure, maybe just find a cafe and hang out till we head back to the Onsen. Dinner at the Onsen.

5/25: Breakfast at the Onsen. Check out, stop at a bakery/cafe to pickup snacks for the train, drop off rental car and then take the Shinkansen back to Tokyo.

  1. There’s about 6 famous suspension bridges in Tochiji, looks like you’re staying near Tsutsuji Suspension Bridge. You could check that out.
If you want to do some shopping there’s Nasu Garden Outlet shopping mall.

  2. According to Japan Guide, these are some of the sights for Nasu-Shiobara:

And this great article from Japan Guide where one of the writers visits the area:

(restaurants and cafes might not still be open, but it’s a starting point.)

Nasu also has a small amusement park with supposedly a decent roller coaster
