Putting Off Living in Japan

Since childhood I have had a strong interest in the country of Japan and as an adult I have had two opportunities to work there, but I chose other opportunities at the time in order to advance my career and degree of study. I’m sure I’m not the only person with this dilemma. For those of you who turned down an opportunity to live and work in Japan:
1. Did you ever receive another opportunity to live and work in Japan?
2. Did you think it was worth waiting to live in Japan?

  1. I lived in Japan for a few years but moved back to my home country in order to advance my career.

About ten years have gone by since then and like you I have received offers to work in Japan but I have passed them all by so far mainly becuase the hours, pay, and work-life balance are nowhere near as good as what is offered by companies in my home country.

I do think I will move back to Japan eventually (my wife’s family is there) but I think it will be when I am closer to retirement and can just enjoy the slow life out there. For now it’s enough to go back to visit every 1-2 years.

  2. Japan’s not going anywhere. I think the best thing is to go to Japan when you can make enough money and have a fulfilling career there, in order to live a happy and comfortable life. Too many people move to Japan by getting low paid jobs they don’t actually like, and end up hating it.
