help with typing in japanese

hi, im new to learning japanese and i only know some hiragana, im trying to use my on screen keyboard to type only in hiragana, but everytime i type a character and then type another character it repeats the first one and puts the second one next to it. i read an article saying that youre supposed to type in romaji first and it gets translated to kana, but that doesnt seem to be working? how do i type just hiragana? thanks
