New information on the Genki Tadoku Books

Hi, so last year when the Genki Tadoku Books got announced, [I shared it in this subreddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/comments/uyvhq3/new_graded_readers_for_those_studying_with_genki/) and quite a few of you seemed interested, so I’d also like to share with you the new info that just got out!

# What are the Genki Tadoku Books?

It’s a graded reader series made especially for those learning Japanese through the Genki textbooks. There will be different short little tales and stories written to match the vocabulary and grammar taught in the text- and workbooks. The publishers writes that they hope readers will be able to read all their books without dictionaries. For each lesson of the Genki textbook there are two short books to read and apply what you’ve learned. [Here’s a sample of the very first book](https://saas.actibookone.com/content/detail?param=eyJjb250ZW50TnVtIjoyMDQ5NzN9&detailFlg=0&pNo=1).

For the physical release the books are further divided in 4 volumes: Box 1 covers lessons 1-6 of the first Genki textbook, Box 2 covers lessons 7-12 of the first Genki textbook and the boxes 3 and 4 divide the second Genki textbook. Each box consists of 12 short books, except for box 4 which consists of 10.

# When will they release?

The e-books for language schools have been out for a while now, but **next month** the physical copies will finally relase. According to the publisher’s site it’s **March 5th**, according to Amazon Japan it’s **March 1st**.

# How much will they cost?

To be honest, I’m a bit disappointed about the price. [Amazon Japan](https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/4789018318?) and the [publisher’s site](https://bookclub.japantimes.co.jp/jp/search/?search_menu=keyword&tab=3&search_word=%E5%A4%9A%E8%AA%AD) currently list all 4 books at 7700 yen, which is very pricey compared to the two other graded reader tadoku books by ask and taishukan. Here’s to hoping there will be discounts. If you learn Japanese at a university, maybe try asking your library to purchase them instead 😉

(Again: I am not affiliated with Japan Times or the Genki textbooks. I am just really passionate about reading resources in Japanese)

  1. 7,700 yen *each*, so roughly **$240** to cover all of Genki I and II ?!!? How is that even possible? Those books better reveal some crazy secrets about メアリー and たけし.

  2. $3 a book! $3 a book over here! (Or all of them for free if you have Kindle Unlimited!)

  3. So basically a lot of money for what is essentially going to be 4 books with stiff non natural Japanese which isn’t even going to help the reader at all?
