I noticed since moving here 9 months ago that anything that is left on the Tatami develops a moldy smell. Now I flipped them and have sprayed vinegar all over the bottom while airing and vacuuming and spraying alcohol. I noticed that after I flipped them there were a few mold spots. However the mold smell is very strong. I’m worried the majority of the damage is inside.
Could anyone offer any advice?
Thanks

I presume that the previous owner did not clean well. A yearly clean is required, and mold is a bigger problem in the summer.
What are you leaving on the tatami? If it’s an unfolded futon, that could be the cause of the mold.
Ag+ deodorant. Silver ions will prevent mould.
I’ve heard that tatami used to be not that common, one for the expense but also because things that hold a lot of moisture in a damp country aren’t a great idea. I enjoy tatami in restaurants and other settings, but in my home I’ve come to prefer wood floors with rugs.
I’ve heard that the landlord to fix this for you. Especially if it was since before you moved there. They might have to give you new tatami floor.
Here’s a wild suggestion but one that will immediately fix all problems with mold anywhere in the home : ozone generator. Look up the topic and check Amazon for a powerful one that fits your room sizes. Way it works is you start the ozone generator, immediately leave the house and return like 12 hours later to air out the room/house. The more powerful the generator, the more ozone it creates. Ozone destroys oxygen particles. It will literally kill every living thing in its path. Bugs in the wall, mold in the tatami, mold in damp spaces, etc. I helped a friend with this very issue, how I know about the topic. 2 ozone sessions in and the scent in their home went from damp and nasty to clean and scent less.
One thing to be very careful of is not breathing in ozone while the machine is on, and to also give proper ventilation before breathing normally inside the room/home where you placed it. From what I read online, breathing in straight ozone will burn your lungs.
