Hello guys. I would like to ask for your comments regarding our itinerary for our Nagoya trip by the end of March 2023. We are a group of 4 and we will visit Takayama, Shirakawago, Gero, and Nagoya City on this 6-day trip.

* Travel to Nagoya Station then eat lunch
* Travel to Takayama

Day 2 (Takayama)

* Miyagawa Morning Market
* Sanmachi-suji District
* Heritage Houses
* Sakurayama-Hachimangu Shrine
* Higashiyama Walkway

Day 3 (Shirakawa-go)

* Shiroyama Observatory Deck
* Wada House
* Walk around the village

Day 4 (Gero)

* Visit Onsen
* Stay for a night in a Ryokan

Day 5 (Nagoya)

* Stay for a night at Nagoya

Day 6 (Travel back home)

We are just wondering if we can go for a day trip to Kanazawa or Toyama on Day 2 since we are staying in Takayama for Days 1 – 3. We are just worried that we might miss out on many of the attractions in Takayama because we will arrive there late afternoon on Day 1.

We intend to buy JR Pass (Takayama-Hokuriku). Will this cover most of our transportation cost or do we still need to buy IC Cards?

Thank you so much for your help.

  1. maybe you can merge your Day 2 and Day 3 itinerary. the Sanmachi-suji District can be visited on Day 1 after your arrival in Takayama. then explore the morning market and heritage houses on Day 2 then travel to Shirakawa-go afterwards. You can free-up your Day 3 for Kanazawa or Toyama

  2. How much free time do you have on day 4 before you go to Gero?

    The bus to Shirakawago starts from either Kanazawa or Takayama and you can either continue or return at the Shirakawago half way point. You would be able to leave your luggage at the bus station and explore Shirakawago (2 to 3 hours) before continuing if you were transferring cities.

    If day 2 was Kanazawa you could use day 3 to visit Shirakawago on the way to Takayama and still have some time to explore Takayama on arrival. I ask about day 4 above as it would be good to have some hours in Takayama before you depart for Gero on that day otherwise your cutting Takayama time right down.

    There is a lot more to see in Kanazawa than Toyama. Kanazawa and Toyama are quite close so it would be easy to make a quick trip.
