Importance of TOEIC for job hunting in Japan

Hi! I recently learned that TOEIC results are only valid for two years (pretty late, I know). As I’m starting job hunting, I was thinking it might be good to sit it again, just to include it on my resume. I’ve really got nothing to lose by doing it, and I know I would pass it, but I’m currently living in a remote place and commuting between the test center and my home is really inconvenient, on top of all the related fees.

My English level is near native, and I’ve been teaching it in Japan for almost 5 years now. Considering this, I was wondering just how important you think having the TOEIC would be for employers.

Thank you!

  1. TOEIC is not a blocker for getting a job.

Some big companies even have internal English test that you can take after joining the company.

They’re asking for TOEIC certificate because it’s on their checklist, just tell them you’ll get it later after joining.

  2. I used to hire almost exclusively high level bilinguals due to the nature of my department. I definitely looked at TOEIC and it was a major screening component (900+) alongside other criteria.

I would not have an issue with an out of date TOEIC score, particularly if your last score was up there.
