Hoshino Resort Towada was my partner’s and my absolute favorite destination in all of Japan. And we’ve been to every corner of the country.
I treated her for her birthday, and it was the first of those we celebrated as a married couple. I can remember the whole menu was decorated with apple infused items.
That night we took a night tour of the frozen waterfalls, which were lit up with all colors of the rainbow.
And what really stole the show was the rotenburo; icicles and ice pillars surrounded the bath, accented by a pitch black sky that contrasted with giant rolling hills of white trees.
Got any recommendation for ryokan with private in room onsen bath?
The ryokan/onsen I like in Aomori just got put on Japanese TV for a fucking segment about “foreign tourists are now coming to this place in droves.” Just 30 minutes of fluff and Euros being dubbed over in Japanese. Need to find a new place 🙁
Sukayu is my personal favorite onsen in Japan. I’m a sucker for wood baths and acidic white water. Also when I went was pre renovation and it was like 7000 yen for the night with 2 meals? Fantastic. Amazing water, great staff, nice hike just out the parking lot. I want to go back.
だってばよ
Furofushi is nice as well. Near Aoike Blue Pond.
I think its Hachinohe that has the highest number of onsen per citizen. There’s some lovely ones there too! I like the one at Sunpia but that can get a little pricy.
My wife spent several days in Aomori — and wished we could have stayed longer. Hakkoda-san (and Sukayu Onsen) and our visit (by public transit and lots of walking) to Takayama Inari Shrine in Tsugaru were our high points. (But the Nebuta Museum was also pretty awesome).
