What fashion is okay in Japan and what style outfits should i absolutely not wear? I have multiple styles. Which would be frowned upon?

I wear street fashion (cargo pants and t shirts that are tied in the back to show some stomach, with waist chains, i also have locs). Sometimes i wear kawaii kei, so skirts, cardigans, mary janes, etc.

I read that they dont wear cozy college clothes there like we do in america, so i shouldnt wear leggings and a hoodie to school (uh oh.)

I dont wanna only pack boring clothes and regret it. But i dont want to offend the public.

If anyone had any input please let me know, my JP friends said id get a pass since im a foreigner but im not sure.

  1. Street style is extremely fashionable at the moment, everyone is in baggy clothes, cargo pants, nike dunks, hoodies etc etc. Of course there are still girls that wear the kawaii style so lots of skirts etc.

Yeah, it’s very uncommon to see women wearing leggings and a hoodie, unless they’re actually exercising.

From my experience, exposing your legs is absolutely fine, but keep the top half of yourself relatively covered. At night, you can be a bit more flexible in your style choices.

  2. Don’t walk around the street showing off your chest and you can get away with your American style. Everyone will just assume you’re a tourist.

That being said, if you want to know current Japanese fashion trends jump on insta and there are plenty of fashion reels where you can see the various styles. It ranges from beautiful skirt shirt/ dress combos to as defmute said, baggy stuff.

Assuming you’re coming for the summer prepare for that as much as you can by having breathable clothes. Fashion isn’t as important as not becoming a ball of stinky sweat.

  3. I work at a university and pretty much anything goes. Right now we’re in the middle of a serious 90s revival— baggier jeans, fitted tops, etc. American college sweatshirts with the big logos are very in. But I also have girls who come to class in more dressy clothes such as nice dresses, skirts, etc. I don’t see a lot of skin exposed— but it is currently February!

The Japanese college kids don’t wear leggings as pants, but some foreign exchange students do. As do plenty of foreigners in my area— mainly expat moms. No one will be offended, it’s just not the style.

  4. Wear what you want. You’re just a passerby who will be gone in no time for most people and it doesn’t matter what you wear.
