The sentence pattern book is the must have book imo.
I found the kanji book pretty mediocre and requires google to fill out the info.
There are a lot of workbooks and accessory materials for MNN 1 & 2. Nobody uses all of them IME but MNN is very dense so some accessories may be useful.
In language school, most everyone had the Translation & Grammar notes. Some of the top students and some struggling students used the grammar and/or listening books in the library.
Maybe try studying very deeply through Chapter 10 with the translation & grammar notes. Then decide if you want to add another accessory.
IMHO:
– The **Translation & Grammar Notes** (in your foreign language) are helpful for grammar explanations and vocabulary. They are not incredible but I would still recommend them as the MNN textbooks are entirely in Japanese and missing some content (not all of that missing content is in the “notes” either).
– The (expensive) **listening kit with audio 5 CDs** are excellent listening material. This was really my favourite accessory to MNN.
– The **kanji books** are not so popular in Japan.
– I liked the workbooks like “**Kaite Oboeru Bunkei Renshucho**”. The old version was Yen 1300 but I didn’t see many answers at the back so teachers corrected a lot of my answers.
– The listening comprehension textbooks with CDs “**Chokai Tasuku 25**” are good too and the old version cost Yen 2400. Mine had a big separate answer guide in back.
– The 2 **Mira San novels** are great and inexpensive. They are probably useful as one finishes the MNN1 book. Fun books which review a lot of the vocabulary, grammar, sentences, and characters of the beginner textbooks. They cost about Y1000 each
