Information on cities that no longer exist

Hi all,

Lately I have been wanting to learn more about my Japanese background. Through my koseki I discovered that my family comes from Kawachi city which only existed for only a few years in Osaka prefecture during the 1950s

As Kawachi no longer exists I can’t find it on Google maps to get a general idea of where my relatives used to live.

Would there happen to be any “history” website where I could possibly get more information on these addresses/cities that no longer exist?

Thanks in advance

  1. Kawachi City merged with Fuse City and ~~Kataoka~~ Hiraoka City to become Higashi Osaka City. There are still a bunch of station in that area with Kawachi in its name.

  2. Check cartography sites. That area is likely well mapped. Also, most larger libraries have historical maps of nearby areas.

  3. What comes after the city in the address? That neighborhood probably still has the same name

  4. If possible, go to a local library in the area. They usually have a section on local history with old documents, periodicals, pictures, etc.

  5. The neighborhood names don’t usually change on municipal amalgamations. so the rest of the address after the city name should still exist in the current city.
