Visa Requirements for student with online business?

I’m coming to Japan on a 2 year language school visa. In my home country I run a Shopify. Would I need visa permissions to keep running my Shopify (basically just shipping orders now from Japan but still processing into my American bank account) and if so how would I get these permissions?

  1. Yes, you need to request permission from immigration to engage in activities outside the scope of your status of residence.

    Details here: https://www.isa.go.jp/en/applications/guide/nyuukokukanri07_00045.html

Keep a log book for how much time you spend doing it as immigration may ask for proof that you’re spending less than 28 hours a week doing it.

Don’t forget that you’ll owe taxes on income generated by the work you do while physically present in Japan.

  2. Since Covid started, it’s become so expensive to send packages from Japan to the rest of the world, so you might find that shipping orders is going to be prohibitively expensive
