Residence card question.

I arrived here in June, for a job which has a year contract.

My card says it expires in June and of course that my period of stay is 1 year.

Should I start applying for a new one soon? What exactly does this entail? Will the govt want to speak to my employer?

I ask because last week my boss offered to renew my contract for another year. Great news but I’m not sure about this yet, I would like to stay in Japan but maybe work elsewhere…

  1. This information is up on the MOJ website in Japanese and English, so try to search around. If I remember correctly, you can submit your renewal request up to three months before it expires.

  2. You need to apply for application for extension of period of stay (online we just like to say “renew your visa”)

You can start the process 3 months before your current one expires, so for you, should it expire in June would be ~3 March.

Your employer will need to compete one page of the application form. You have to complete the information for the other pages on the application form.
