High Chairs in Japan (Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto)

I have a 2 week vacation planned in May and was wondering if high chairs and booster seats are common in Japan. I will mainly be staying in Tokyo with a few days in Kyoto and Osaka. Are High chairs/ booster seats common or should I plan to bring Portable one? My kid will be just under 2 yrs old when we visit.

  1. Family restaurant’s and food courts usually have children seats or booster seats. They are the most suitable. Some chain restaurants also have, like conveyor belt sushi for example.

Restaurants where you sit on tatami floors are also suitable.

Some other non-family restaurants also have child seats, but many will not allow children at all.

It’s best to check with the restaurant before, if you want to eat somewhere specific.

  2. Check with the restaurant but many have high chairs— especially in areas popular with families. This includes department store restaurants, family restaurants, chain restaurants, etc. Obviously the tiny izakaya or cafe won’t have them, but lots of places do. So it kinda depends on where you want to eat and if a high chair is absolutely necessary.

We live in Japan and are frequently offered a high chair for our 3 year old, but we never take it because kid only wants to sit on my lap when we’re out. So it’s not an issue if they don’t have one either.

However, we’ve never been offered a booster. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a booster seat in a restaurant here, but we don’t eat at family restaurants often, just other kid-friendly places.
