Business for Sale in Tokyo?

I’m a Business Manager in Tokyo. A buddy of mine recently reached out to me and asked if I were interested in buying their Bar, asking for 300万.

I didn’t reply right away as I was pondering the Idea with other friends. A day passed and when I came to the conclusion that it was worth the financial risk to me I was told the bar has already been sold.

I’m a bit disappointed about it but that got me wondering, if I wanted to buy a bar/cafe/restaurant from someone else, what would be my best shot at finding one in the Tokyo Area?

  1. Among non-Japanese, I only very rarely see someone post about selling a business – usually a small English school or coffee shop.

However, there is an industry in small M&A. I’d almost call it “micro M&A” because investment banks wouldn’t do transactions this small.

As you know, the population is aging rapidly and the kids -if there are any – often don’t want the family businesses. In my neighborhood, there are a few posters up adverstising for M&A services for specifically small businesses. They do matchmaking and the acquistion. You might not want to get into all of that, but it’s something you could think about.
