Visa options for returning to Japan after a extended absence

I hope this can be posted here. I have had this question deleted by the mods from two other Japan related subs… I’m kind of confused where it can go.

Here’s my question:

My son (9) is Japanese from his Japanese mother. I am currently living in the US with him, but we both want to return to Japan (I previously lived there for 25 years; he for the first 7 years of his life)

What are my VISA options? I know the country is not currently offering tourist visas. And I know from looking at gaijinpot that many companies are not wanting to sponsor people for work visas right now.

My ex-wife mentioned that she thinks I should be able to get a “caregiver” visa to take care of my son. Is that an option or is she thinking of something else? Once I’m in the country I would of course look to get work. I have many contacts there that have already offered to give me part-time work, and I have many former students who have expressed excitement at taking lessons from me again. But I have to get in the country first.

Are there any other possibilities?

  1. You should reach out to your nearest Japanese consulate. There isn’t a specific “parent/guardian of a Japanese national” visa, so my expectation is that they’d give you a flavour of designated activities. But it is of course all case by case.
