I want to live in Japan but have been accepted for a creative writing degree in England this year. Now, people may say it’s a useless degree but I have done my research and would 100% want to study it… If I wanted to stay in England. Now, considering I want to go to Japan it’s probably going to be a waste of time. However, I don’t want to wait a year to apply for an IT-related degree (and maybe get declined). Is it possible to do this course, which can include either a semester or full year in Japan, and then get a degree similar to yours in Japan?
This idea came to me when I saw this YouTuber who studied in the USA, then got a job, and then got onto a Japanese scholarship (met scholarship or something) when she was 26. However, I feel like even If I do that I might still not be able to get a job in Japan.
This is because I would be 28 when I would be finishing the scholarship in Japan. I will be starting this CW degree in September when I will be 20. It will last till Im 24 if I choose the year abroad option (I’ll obviously be choosing Japan haha). Then I would get onto the Japanese scholarship by 24/25 (if i even succeed) and would finish at 27/28.
The worry that comes from this is, “why would a company hire me, a 28 year old foreigner, when they could hire a 21 year old native with the same degree and skills.”
Tbh, maybe I can find a job more related to CW and maybe incorporate programming skills as on the CWdegree you do game writing. Idk. But basically wondering would this kind of path work?

Why do you want to live in Japan? What job do you really want to do? What good is a degree in English going to do in IT where experience and ability are more heavily weighted, or in game design which requires programming or graphic design skills and, for the vast majority of companies, an ability to function in Japanese. These things matter more than your age. It seems like you’re jumping to IT just because you think it will get you to Japan.
Trying to obtain a MEXT scholarship to just repeat four years of education is an extreme waste of time. It would be better to just apply to jobs in your field than get an essentially useless second degree. You could try to go to graduate school in Japan via MEXT if you do well in your current program, but you again have to ask yourself how marketable your skill set is.
I think you’re planning way too far in advance and haven’t thought beyond “I want to go to Japan”. Visit first and go from there.
