International Christian University or UBC?

Hello, this is my first time posting and I’ve been really scratching my head on this…this might sound like a stupid question but, I was accepted to UBC’s Applied Science program in Canada and International Christian University in Tokyo. I always had a dream of working and perhaps even settling down in Japan. I guess in terms of ranking, UBC is clearly the better option but if I want to pursue a career in Japan, is perhaps ICU a better option? I guess UBC is a safer but more roundabout option but I heard that university ranking does not really matter to Japanese employers. I just hope to not make the wrong decision, moving to Japan has always been my dream but I don’t want to end up regretting my major or being unable to find a job later…

  1. Well I was in a similar position last year, the same one actually, and you really need to know one thing:

Japan isn’t going anywhere, you can always do an exchange semester or year to Japan if you go to UBC. And if you really want to be in Japan after that, then you can pursue a masters in Japan and find employment after that.

Another thing would be the prices of the universities, for me, UBC was really expensive since I would be an international student. Though I don’t know your situation on this matter, so you’re going to have to give it some thought if it’s going to affect your decision, since it really does matter in the grand scheme of things imo.

Also, do you enjoy sciences? Make sure you know if you’re going to like the major if you take UBC’s offer.

At the end of the day it’s your decision to make. Some advice I got that I can pass to you is to make a pros and cons chart about studying at either university.

  2. Japanese university generally inferior compared to western school. Japanese schools for domestic purposes, so unless you are planning to never leave Japan and to work/retire there, go to UBC.

Maybe even an “overseas” school may be more prestigious than most Japanese school (unless it’s Tokyo University Law or something).

How is this even a contest?
