I am finishing my contract and will return to my home country, but I noticed the After JET conference is based around jobs in Japan. Are there any similar events or resources that are surrounded on finding jobs in the USA? Thank you!
I recommend looking into job fairs at colleges when you return. Maybe ask your university for some resources. Ask your school’s Career Services office! Also, expect the timeline for getting interviews and hiring to be longer than usual right now.
In addition to career fairs at local universities in your area, your local JETAA chapter might have some kind of event for returners, some do some don’t. There’s also a group on Facebook that shares job information for JETs, both jobs in Japan and back in home countries. Im sure if you search for JET and jobs you’ll find it.
It entirely depends on what industry you’re trying to enter too. A lot of jobs aren’t advertised and you can get them through networking.
Check for meetups and conferences – if they exist for your field. LinkedIn sometimes can help (it’s hit or miss).
You’ll probably need to focus your search based on what you want to do and where you want to be.
Everything people mentioned but job market is meh rn. Just get a job doing something- even if it’s waiting tables and job search. Leverage your existing contacts, from uni, past coworkers or bosses, networking will be your best bet in the current climate.
I highly, highly recommend tapping into the JET alum network. Go to events that get you in front of other alum that are further into their careers and let them know you’re searching for a job and what you’re interested in. I’ve found that older former JETs are very reminiscent of their experience and consequently like helping people fresh out of the program. Every position I’ve ever had has actually been in some way tied to JET and I’ve managed to work my way up to a place I’m happy in simply by having a single common experience with my peers/superiors
Be sure to connect with your local JET alumn network, join any related groups on Facebook, get active on LinkedIn, and keep an eye out for any interesting jobs here: https://nihongojobs.com/
