Learn Japanese in online virtual worlds?

I have been working on an online game to learn Japanese (first language among others) called Decode: [https://www.decodeapp.io/](https://www.decodeapp.io/)

*Edit:* ***The game can be played solo or together with others*** ***over text and/or video*** *in immersive scenarios to practically learn a language through authentic materials. In other words, if video conversations are too much for you, then you can opt to only go for audio or simply just text chat. However, I believe that learning a language is most effective when self-study is combined with real-world practice, meaningfully interacting with other people. Therefore, I have designed the journey to help you gain an understanding of the fundamentals as a beginner, via structured comprehensible input in a save environment. Once you have gained enough confidence, I provide you with opportunities to connect and explore with language exchange partners or teachers via video, audio, or text.*

What do you think about this concept of learning Japanese in a virtual world together with other people and do you think there are any major limitations and issues with this approach in contrast with other methods?

  1. Oooh this sounds intriguing 🙂 I have been barely learning for a month or so courtesy of Duolingo, and it hasn’t really been working. I knew a little going in and I’ve learned a couple words but no way could I form a full sentence. Maybe the biggest limitation would be grammar/sentence structure? You can’t really have a full conversation with one word responses, and I feel like it’d be difficult to interpret or directly translate stuff like that.

  2. I am curious, how many words do the materials you include cover? A major weak point I’ve seen in a lot of immersive games for learning languages is they only cover 1000 words tops and not necessarily all common words, when a language dissimilar to english like japanese is going to require at minimum 2000 common words but likely a few thousand more than that.
