Buying a phone before returning home.

I’m leaving Japan for the foreseeable future in a couple of months and am thinking about getting a SIM-free Redmi Note 11 before I leave. As it’s about 10,000 yen cheaper than if I was to buy it back home. I’m presuming as it is SIM free there shouldn’t be any problems, but I just wanted to check with japan life if there was any differences. As it is from the Mi brand there may be some quirks that vary?

Once I go back home, I am leaving straight away so I am not too worried about the warranty period.

  1. Doesn’t even support Japanese Felica NFC, so you should be good to use it elsewhere.

    It only supports 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28, 38, 40, 41 LTE bands which is really bad for Japan, hopefully it’ll do better in your home country.

  2. Does it make a shutter sound when you take a photo? I can not stand it so I normally buy it outside of Japan even though it costs more overseas. I tried third party photo app but the quality is worse, and it doesn’t not mute the sound completely. I heard with IPhone, it is muted outside of Japan due to .. don’t remember technical term.

  3. If it says in the description “japanese version” then it has the japanese MIUI. Global version of MIUI is much better you get frequent and faster MIUI updates. I suggest avoid the japanese version. Tho you can just unlock the phone and flash the global MIUI.

  4. Why buy a Chinese phone in Japan?
Have a look if the global version is available on AliExpress or something.

  5. Probably would work fine. Xiaomi’s sold here come with a JP ROM but its pretty much the same as other roms apart from some stuff to do with Felicia NFC.

If you really want to be sure check the bands listed here against whatever bands your chosen mobile operator in your home country uses. https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/11-Smartphone-Megapixel-Fingerprint-Authentication/dp/B09SG7J73T/ref=sr_1_9?crid=3VLU8NTH612AZ&keywords=xiaomi&qid=1675946317&sprefix=xiaomi%2Caps%2C223&sr=8-9
