To those of you who regularly read Japanese, how long have you been studying, and do you have a hard time clearly reading and comprehending the following page worth of text? Could you understand it all with no dictionary and without stumbling? (Please tell the honest truth! I’m taking a survey about this for my Japanese class.)
If so, what parts were difficult for you? If you want, feel free to bold the parts you didn’t understand.

首すじのしわが、おじいちゃんが手をのばすたびにのびた。
アコーディオンみたいだ。
おじいちゃんは、まだ返事をしない。
ときどき、と石に水をかけては、ゆらゆらと、といでいる。
おじいちゃんが、ぼくのヒゴノカミをとったあ！母さん、とり返してよ！
ゲントが、わめいた。
急にあんなものとぎしたりして。きっとあしたは雨ね。
母さんは、首をすくめた。
それから二日だった。
そのあいだ、ぴかぴかにとぎすまされたヒゴノカミは、父さんが茶ぶうとうにいれて、本だなのよこにかたづけてしまった。

N1 holder.
Problems were, don’t see 研ぐ enough to remember it when it’s kana only, didn’t know what 肥後守 and 茶封筒 were. Otherwise it’s fine, overall lack of kanji was unpleasant.
Sparse kanji and a lack of quotation marks made it less clear than it had to be on first glance. Other than that there’s nothing particularly difficult about it.

It’s like reading ははは花がすき rather than 母は花が好き.
even with the lack of kanji it’s completely understandable. You don’t need kanji that much when you understand the context of the text just as in english you can simplygive a quick look at some letters in the words and get the meaning and the narrative context.
Kanji is overrated in this case
I’ve got N1 and read regularly. I have not seen ヒゴノカミ before, and the lack of kanji is frustrating, but otherwise fine.
For me (N1) the most difficult thing about this is the total lack of context. きっと明日は雨ね？What?
Understanding the words is one thing, but actually comprehending the situation is another.
I didn’t know:
といでどう
ヒゴノカミ
茶ぶうとう
Probably with some more kanji I would have been able to understand it, but idk. Have been studying for 4 years
