Tips for increasing my chances at getting into a student dorm?

Hello r/movingtojapan, I am waiting on final decision about my grad school application for Autumn 2023, and meantime I’ve been taking a look at the Todai dorms and student accommodations around their Hongo campus.

As context, I am hoping to be accepted for a scholarship as finances took a hit after my cancer this past year (I am on maintenance/preventive treatment only now), so I’m eager to a) live someplace affordable b) find a comfortable place with own kitchen as I wish to cook often and c) straightforward commute that will not tax my body. I think dorms would be ideal for me, but I welcome if you have thoughts to the contrary.

Form the little I’ve seen the Toshima dorm and International villages look like the best option, and if it is particularly close I am willing to pay a premium–my issue is I understand dorms are often quite competitive, and I wonder if in your experience there were things you did/I could do to boost my chances of getting a dorm room? I think I saw that being on certain scholarships helps?

If it is of relevance, I am a beginner at Japanese and am currently taking intensive lessons.

Thank you in advance!
