Yoga mat recommendations for intense workouts

I’ve been using the cheap 1,000 yen ones from Don Quixote, but it’s only a matter of weeks or months (if I’m lucky) before little pieces of them start coming off and getting all over the floor. I’m assuming if I dish out more money, the quality will improve–though that’s not necessarily always the case (hence this post!). I wanted to ask if anyone has found a durable yoga mat to use not for yoga, but for more intense HIIT workouts and the like.

Preferably nothing too large. Also, it would be best if it can be rolled up like any other yoga mat.

Recommendations online or in store would be appreciated. Thanks!

  1. Costco. Even if you’re not a member, if you know a member they can buy online and have it shipped to you.

  2. I know what you mean! In the summer I do workouts on my yoga mat and it can get sweaty. Next thing I know pieces of the mat are scattered around the floor and stuck to my skin!

Any Amazon links would be great! I tried out the 2,000円 ones from my local sports store. But it started flaking as soon as I started anything intense. I wonder if something like a set of foam tiles that would be used on a gym floor is better.

  3. Try to avoid foam style ones. They provide good cushion, but the same cushion is due to air in the foam, thus areas where the material can rip. This is why more expensive yoga mats are made with natural rubber to avoid the issues with foam.

I’ve had a 熱可塑性エラストマー mat before, which was stronger than the foam ones, but not as grippy or thick–though this might have been due to it being cheap. You might also want to look at regular exercise mats, like ones made with ニトリルブタジエンゴム because they can have foam in the middle for cushion, but rubber outsides to not tear as easily.

Might also sound weird, but I sometimes preferred just a shag rug with maybe a pad underneath. You can’t just roll it up and put it away, but it can be a decorative piece and useful for exercises.

  4. I *think* that [this is the one I bought](https://www.amazon.co.jp/GronG-%E3%82%B0%E3%83%AD%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B0-%E3%83%88%E3%83%AC%E3%83%BC%E3%83%8B%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B0%E3%83%9E%E3%83%83%E3%83%88-%E3%82%A8%E3%82%AF%E3%82%B5%E3%82%B5%E3%82%A4%E3%82%BA%E3%83%9E%E3%83%83%E3%83%88-hn0474/dp/B01N0V6PYM/ref=sr_1_27?__mk_ja_JP=%E3%82%AB%E3%82%BF%E3%82%AB%E3%83%8A&crid=220662JTEZGPB&keywords=yoga+mat&qid=1676005494&sprefix=yoga+ma%2Caps%2C268&sr=8-27) like 4 years ago and it’s held up very well against kettlebell workouts and also going underneat my bike trainer from time to time. So far no problems with little bits falling off or anything and it’s seen some hard use.

  5. Manduka Pro and Pro Lite. Water doesn’t soak in so easy to wipe clean and the grip is amazing. I ordered mine from USA Amazon because it was cheaper. Also cheaper because of holiday sale.

  6. I bought a floor mat they use in gyms to put under equipment. Thick foam pieces that fit like a puzzle.
They’re also soundproof for jumping and burpees.
