Japan geography

Does anyone know a good resource that can break down all the prefecture, what they are known for, companies, and major cities there?

Seems like I can get list of the cities and prefectures, but I’m having a hard time memorizing them. Figured if I had something a bit more tangible, it would help me remember them.

  1. There are plenty of courses on Memrise to help you memorize the prefectures and their locations.

  2. No idea but that’d be cool. An all-in-one map detailing it. Saving for later in case someone answers.

  3. If you use Anki, there is a deck called “Japanese prefectures” that is pretty good. It has cards that show you a map of Japan, asking to point out where a prefecture is. Cards for how to read the name ect. I think it might have the capitals, I just added the map cards to my one deck for prefecture and city names.

  4. I was thinking something like this would be nice too… specifically maybe something aimed at elementary aged kids maybe, that teach you about each prefecture. Reading practice and educational at the same time

  5. Honestly, Wikipedia is great for this kind of stuff.

[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_regions_of_Japan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_regions_of_Japan) – There is a chart near the top of this page with a list of the general regions and their containing prefectures. Each item in the list links to dedicated articles where you can find an overview, pictures and plenty of other info that you can dig deeper into if you like.

  6. There’s a children’s video game that was big in the nineties and early 2000’s Momotaro Dentetsu that just got remade in 2020 and is available on switch. I don’t think there’s an English version, but it’s for kids under 10 so the Japanese is very simple (and spelled out in furigana).

It uses actual train lines, though simplified, and references local specialties (名物?) and it’s very cute. Lots of poop jokes, but it will make you learn a lot of place names and regions. I’m starting to see how some place names “sound like they’re in Hokkaido” even though I don’t quite understand what that means yet.
