Just joined Konami sports club – anything to know with gym/pool etiquette?

This will be my first time entering a sports facility or pool in Japan. I read an article once of someone saying that every hour people get out the pool and they got told off for doing exercises by the pool?! Anything I should know?

Thanks! 🏊‍♀️ 🏋️

  1. Welcome to Earth. Us humans usually read the room and try to mirror others behavior when we are in unfamiliar surroundings. In most cases though, we just rely on our species natural instincts and common sense when in public.

  2. Read the rules as sometimes gyms differ slightly. But here are few tips.

Generally pools have directions for each lane and different pace. Check the signs or ask staff. Usually staff will recognize you’re new and come to explain.

Before entering the pool, wash yourself in the pool showers that’s in additional to common sense showering.

You need hair cap if you’re going to dip your head .

Follow common sense in not disturbing others.

  3. Wipe your sweat from the machines when you’re finished with them and don’t collide with anyone in the pool.

  4. wait for your turn if you’re swimming in the same lane. Advanced/intermediate lanes requires you to finish your lap without rest stops because you will inconvenience the person behind you.

  5. * Most pools require all swimmers to use swim caps at all times (even if one’s bald or has a shaved head).
    * Leaving the pool once per hour or once in two hours is standard: I always joke it’s to so the lifeguards can check for bodies, but it’s mostly so they can check for little things on the bottom of the pool that might hurt people.
    * Be aware that some pools do not allow flip turns at all and others allow them only in certain lanes.
    * Stretching or calisthenics not involving equipment or jumping are fairly common.

  6. While in the gym, you are required to wear indoor gym shoes. This is pretty common at gyms in Japan — not just Konami
