Private Origami Class Tokyo- Advice needed

Hello!

Wife and I are headed to Japan for our first anniversary. As the first anniversary traditional gift is paper, I was hoping to surprise her with an origami class in Tokyo. I’m struggling on figuring out where and how to book these though as I mostly just speak English.

I’ve found:

1) Origami Kaikan – the origami museum in Tokyo. I saw that their mini sessions are closed due to covid, but you can still book private sessions. I’ve been unable to find out how though, has anyone had any experience with this?

2) Mai-Ko – this seems like their speciality is origami classes, but all of their dates are greyed out and can’t be selected for the entire year, so I’m assuming that I’m doing something wrong.

Any help y’all could offer would be appreciated!

  1. Did you try emailing Origami Kaikan at the email listed at the bottom of the English page on their website? I’d assume you’d do that to book a private session.

Unsolicited, I will also mention that there’sa traditional paper-MAKING class at Ozu Washi (小津和紙) in Tokyo that I plan to do on my next trip. You might look into paper making classes, if you’re unable to find the class you desire.

Do you know if the class is in English? You might also look into other offerings available via AirBnB experiences, if you haven’t already.

  2. I just wanted to say this is a lovely idea! My husband and I do the traditional gifts each year and it’s been really fun. I hope it works out!

  3. Have you considered hiring a reputable local tour guide? They run anywhere from $100-$400 per day depending on the length of time you need them. You can tell them your needs and they can book everything for you. Plus, if the class happens to be in Japanese and neither you nor your wife speaks Japanese, the guide can translate.
